Carlena Dennis is Hired as New Sober Living Home Director

A new director was recently hired to oversee the Men’s Sober Living Home, which was formerly a men’s shelter. Carlena Dennis has an extensive background in the field of social services, focusing on substance use recovery and community support, which should make her the perfect person for her new role.

“Before joining EndazhiNoojimong (the sober living home), I was part of the LCO CCS Program, where I collaborated closely with clients to provide comprehensive case management,” Dennis said. “I also have additional experience supporting individuals in transitional housing and rehabilitation settings through my time as Project Manager for the Comprehensive Opioid Stimulant Substance Use Program. (COSSUP).”

Dennis pursued a further education in social work and community development by earning a master’s degree in human services and a certification in alcohol and drug abuse. She said her studies have have provided a strong foundation for her new role, equipping her with the tools to effectively manage and enhance sober living environments.

“Along with my academic background, my lived experiences make me a great fit for the EndazhiNoojimong team, allowing me to connect with residents on a personal level and support them in meaningful ways,” Dennis said. “Additionally, I am a certified Peer Specialist, which enables me to offer empathetic and effective support to those in recovery.”

Goals and Vision for the Facility

Dennis said one of her primary goals is to strengthen the supportive community within the facility, ensuring that each resident feels empowered and connected.

“I’m committed to implementing programs that focus on holistic recovery, blending traditional healing practices with modern therapeutic approaches. This includes incorporating talking circles with Peer Specialists and integrating Wellbriety teachings. Improving operational efficiency, fostering strong community ties, and ensuring that our services are accessible and effective are key areas of focus for me,” Dennis explained.

She went on to say EndazhiNoojimong is more than just a sober living facility, it’s a vital part of our community’s healing journey.

“Our aim is to provide a safe, nurturing space where individuals can rebuild their lives, supported by a network of peers and professionals,” Dennis said. “The facility is well regarded in the community, and I look forward to enhancing its reputation by introducing initiatives that further its mission of recovery and resilience.”
