The Big Fish Golf Club, owned and operated by the Lac Courte Oreilles Tribe, won the annual Hayward Area Chamber of Commerce (HACC) Large Business of the Year award for 2020. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the award was presented to Indy Thompson, General Manager of the golf course, individually rather than during the usual award ceremony.
“We want to thank all of our employees who made this possible,” stated Thompson. “It would not have been achievable without the hard work and dedication of our staff, especially with Covid-19 making work conditions much more dangerous! Thank you to all.”
According to the HACC website, the Awards Program provides an opportunity to recognize HACC members and their employees that have made a significant contribution to community spirit, service, and quality of life, and have demonstrated outstanding business leadership, innovation, and success.
The Large Business of the Year Award is awarded to a business which employed 25 of more employees throughout the season/year.
The Big Fish Golf Club was purchased by the LCO Tribe in 2019 and reported two successful years since taking over ownership. Originally, the course was designed by famous architect Pete Dye in 2002 and opened to the public in 2004.
Thompson said the course was most recently ranked 14 in the state of Wisconsin by Golfweek Magazine and has been in the Top 15 courses to play since it’s opening in 2004.
HACC noted there are nearly 600 golf courses in the state, so this is a huge achievement.
“This season, their staff showed great customer relations, as proven by the membership increasing and the increase in rounds played. Big Fish experienced such a growth in rounds played this season that records were broken for the month of August and September,” the HACC noted on their website. “People feel safe on the golf course, and if you can provide a safe experience, guests will come back. The staff prides themselves with facial recognition, personalized guest services, and providing an experience second to none. Big Fish is proud to be part of the “Destination” Hayward is and they strive to represent the best of what Hayward has to offer.”
