New Year Resolutions Tradition Continues

By Don Posh

IndiGO

It’s a new year and the tradition of resolutions continues on. Have you made a resolution? A resolution is a personal goal to make a change in your lifestyle. How did you do with your 2024 resolution? According to research, 23% quit their resolutions by the end of the first week, 43% by the end of January and only 9% complete their resolution.

According to Drive Research, 79% of New Year's resolutions are related to

improving health. Some examples of health-related resolutions include:

- Losing weight

- Eating a healthy diet

- Exercising more

- Meditating

- Getting more sleep

- Reducing stress

- Scheduling a checkup

- Quitting smoking

How do I become a member of the 9% that succeed at completing my resolution? It appears that our resolutions may be biting off more than we can chew. I want to lose 30 pounds; I want to quit my habit cold turkey. If we break down a goal like losing 30 Lbs. to 10 Lbs., we can see a much easier goal to achieve. When we lose 10 Lbs., we get to celebrate and feel fulfilled from that accomplishment. Next, we try for another 10 Lbs. and so on. Quitting a habit that has been with us for decades is quite a task. Using a slow steady pace of reduction may take more time, but it has a higher success rate. Can I cut down my cookie consumption from 3 to 2. Seriously, I do love cookies!

The percentage of health related resolutions is telling. We recognize a need to make changes. The older we get, the easier it is to recognize our faults and flaws. If we become successful in completing our resolution, it may result in more New Year’s resolutions and quality time with the ones we love.
