At their Feb. 6 Lac Courte Oreilles Tribal Governing Board (TGB) meeting, the TGB approved designating the old forest products and salt shed behind the LCO Country Store on Hwy E as the new location for a Transportation/Roads Department Building, and also to apply for a grant to rehab it.

Jason Weaver came before the TGB and said the plans are preliminary, but it would be a great site. It would be used as a training facility and also the building has lots of office space and we’d need the large garage bays.

“We can do maintenance, oil changes and all in-house,” Weaver explained.

Jordan St. Germaine, LCO Grants Director, said there are millions available the Tribe can apply for through the Rebuilding America’s Infrastructure through Sustainability and Equity, or RAISE Discretionary Grant Program. The US Dept. of Transportation has the funds available to invest in roads, rail and transit projects in municipalities.

The funds LCO would apply for will be used for equipment to expand into the new building.

Weaver said the grant funds would allow the Transportation/Roads Department to expand. He said the site already has well, water, and electric.

We’d do some clearing to make the space big enough, Weaver added.
